Solo and multicultural ensembles for:

Build Community

The rhythm of drums brings people together throughout the world. They bring magic to all kinds of special gatherings and celebrations. Explore how musical traditions from Europe, Africa, and Latin cultures have developed individually, and how they have come to influence each other. Making music together can help people better appreciate our similarities and differences in today's world.

Heal and Refresh

Rhythm connects us to our basic nature; calms the mind and body. Rhythm also connects us with others, reminds us of the joy of creative interdependence.

Inform and Entertain

Mika Scott's Rhythm Play Workshops are great for adults and children alike. They make excellent presentations for school assemblies and lively, participatory entertainment for other kinds of events. I can provide drums and percussion instruments along with experienced instructors of different cultural backgrounds. Children (and adults) learn rhythms and songs appropriate to their level of development while also experiencing the beauty, magic, and joy of making music together.

Classes, Drum Circles, and Rhythm Play Session

I have over 15 years of experience as a professional drummer, musical improvisor, and teacher. I perform with my own groups, including BataBoom, Geist, and Skeleton Key. I also do regular guest performances with Phil Lesh, and David Gans' Broken Angels. Clients include the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Gateway, and the Westlake Teen Center. I offer classes three days/evenings a week in Berkeley and in San Francisco. Students learn solid technique for traditional afro-cuban and african rhythms, while also learning to improvise and play expressively. Students have opportunities to play and perform at community events, dance workshops, and drum circles led by myself and others. I provide a variety of drums and instruments to learn on; I also sell Remo drums.

I lead Rhythm Play sessions in San Francisco and the East Bay on the third Saturday of each month. These are a blend of movement, dance, percussion, meditation, and community-building.
